Rosstat also presented updated data on coronavirus mortality in October: 75,544 people died during the month, which is slightly higher than previously estimated. On Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova announced that the overall mortality in Russia over the course of 29 days in December decreased by 19.6% compared to 29 days in November, but mortality from coronavirus still predominates in the mortality structure. According to them, the mortality rate in January-November 2021 compared to January-November 2020 increased by 18.5%. Earlier, the Deputy Prime Minister reported that in the first 14 days of December, with a decrease in COVID-19 cases, there was also a decrease in overall mortality of more than 14%. She did not give exact figures.
In the fall, there was a sharp increase in the number of Covid-19 cases and the number of daily registered deaths in Russia. The country has become one of the leading countries in the world in terms of mortality rate. Rosstat’s mortality data exceeds by more than two times the figures provided by the operational headquarters for the fight against the coronavirus. The authorities explained this by a more thorough data collection and a difference in methodology. The headquarters reported yesterday that during the pandemic, 307,948 people died in Russia. Last week, President Vladimir Putin acknowledged that it is difficult to calculate the mortality rate from the coronavirus, but assured that the authorities are striving for “maximum transparency, clarity and understanding”.
